How to Start a Blog: Growing Readership

So you've found your niche, created quality content, and put into practice all the tips for forming a loyal audience. Your blog is up and running, and now you're looking to reach more people and expand your readership.

While an increase in traffic isn't the goal of every blogger, it might be important to those of you who are looking to make money blogging through sponsorships or if your blog is tied into your small business. An increase in viewers often leads to an increase in sales, and I understand firsthand the need to reach as many potential customers as possible.

A huge increase in blog readers doesn't usually happen overnight, but there are several things I've found helpful for speeding up the process. Today I'm sharing 5 tips that have allowed me to double my blog readership in the past month. If you implement these tips, I'm certain that your blog traffic will grow quickly, too.

1. Consistency

This has been one of the most important tips for growing my readership. People return to blogs when they know what to expect from them; it gives them something to look forward to. Maintaining consistency also demonstrates to your followers that you take this blogging business seriously (and if you take it seriously, they are more likely to take it seriously, too).

This could take the form of maintaining a blog schedule, posting regularly (even if it's once a month, once a week, or once a day), keeping up with a blog series, or regularly responding to comments.

2. Creativity

Think about your favorite blogs. What is it about them that keeps you coming back time and time again? If I had to guess, those blogs are your favorite because they have something unique to offer. How can you keep your readers in suspense and get them asking "what's next?" Like I said, people will return to your blog if you give them interesting content to look forward to. Get creative! Think through the things that set you apart from other blogs out there.

Here are some creative stand-outs from my list of favorite blogs:

  • Young House Love - I get so excited when they post new home projects, and I'm always wondering what they're up to next.
  • Chloe Fleury - She may not post daily, but when she does, it blows me away. How does she do all of that with paper?!
  • Wit & Whistle - You never know what to expect from Amanda. Her witty cards and paper goods make me happily uncomfortable every time.

Another perk to exercising creativity: viewers are more likely to share your content on Pinterest, Facebook, and other social media outlets if it's unlike anything else they've seen before.

3. Character

Meet Erin. She's a successful lifestyle blogger who would be the first to tell you that her life is average. She doesn't hold a college degree, she doesn't have children, she doesn't have a cute shop or a creative trade, and she doesn't own an extravagant house. So what keeps readers coming back? She has this charming, witty way of sharing about her "mediocre" life (her words, not mine!). People love following along with her because they never know what she's going to say next. She packs so much of her character into each and every post, which makes it a joy for readers to get to know her.

Infuse your personality into your blog. You don't have to be over the top or slightly sarcastic like Erin, but viewers are more likely to connect with the person behind the blog when they feel like they know them. Consider adding more of your personality into your writing style, tone of voice, photography, design, or social media posts.

4. Community

Networking has been the most beneficial, rewarding aspect of blogging for me.  I realized how much I had to learn about the blogging world when I launched Elle & Company this past January, so I reached out to successful bloggers and business owners that I admired. It was a little intimidating at first, but I was pleasantly surprised by all of the positive responses I received. People were more than willing to try out my products and write reviews, participate in giveaways, and share helpful tips. Not only did I gain followers from being featured on their blog, but I gained friends who I now partner with regularly.

Put yourself out there and contact other people in this industry. If you have great content, services, and/or products, people are usually more than willing to partner with you. Are you a shop owner? Consider offering a giveaway on another blogger's site. Are you a lifestyle blogger? Reach out to another lifestyle blogger and start a series or linkup together. The options are endless. (For more ideas, read this great article on 8 tips for achieving online networking bliss.)

Building relationships with other people in this industry will provide countless opportunities for your blog to grow and boost your credibility.

5. Consideration

Before I write every post, I ask myself one simple question. What is my purpose for sharing this? It's important to have a goal in mind when I'm sharing content, and I'm certain that this thoughtful consideration has been a key factor in increased blog traffic. Here is a look at why I post what I post:

Monday's Letters - This blog series maintains consistency on my blog, gives my readers a glimpse at my character/personality, and (hopefully) provides people with a smile or two. These not-so-design-oriented posts switch things up a bit around here and no two letters are ever the same.

Weekly Truth - These weekly phone backgrounds offer encouragement, showcase my design style, and they are free for my readers. Another advantage that I didn't originally consider: these wallpapers act as a "walking advertisement" for Elle & Company. Creativity, consistency, and a little bit of character.

Coffee Dates - Friday morning Q&As are a great way for me to build community on my blog. They give my readers an opportunity to follow other encouraging ladies, and they bring people to my site that might not have heard of Elle & Company before. Consistency, creativity, community, and character.

Your motives don't have to be elaborate or detailed, but it's obvious when a blogger has purpose behind what they're posting. Consider what you're putting out there and how it will benefit your readers.

Our Kitchen is for Dancing

Confession: Jake and I have been known to bust a dance move in our kitchen. I've mentioned it several times in Monday's Letters, and it turns out that several of you use your kitchen floor as a dance floor, too. So I had some fun with this week's Library addition...

...and I think it might be my favorite art print, yet!

Weekly Truth

"Never underestimate the power of prayer." That's the response I'm guaranteed to get from my best friend Jenny when I'm at a loss over what to do in a situation. I don't dare utter the words, "I guess I'll just pray about it," in her presence anymore. "Just pray about it? Lauren, prayer isn't a last resort."

This week's verse is a great reminder that prayer should always be our first resort.

Therefore confess your sins to one another

This one doesn't always come easy, does it? In the age of Instagram and Twitter, it's easy to pick and choose the images of ourselves that we want others to see. But this verse tells us to confess our faults and our shortcomings to one another. No, this doesn't need to be done over social media, but it does need to be done with trustworthy believers who have our best interest at heart. Acknowledging our faults in the presence of other people provides accountability for our daily struggles and allows us to encourage one another.

And pray for one another, that you may be healed

Once we've confided in each other and confessed our faults, we're told to pray for each other. Earnest prayers. Bold prayers. Praying with the expectation that God will hear us and act. Praying for others gives us a heart for their concerns and deepens our love and affection for them.

The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working

What an encouragement! We can pray with expectation because God hears the prayers of believers who are walking in obedience to Him. And not only does He hear them; James says that our prayers have great power as they are working. Our prayers accomplish much.

A word of encouragement

We can be open and honest with one another in our struggles. God uses our friendships to act in our circumstances through prayer. So instead of trying to cover up the ugly, let's hold each other accountable, lift one another up in prayer, and watch God work.

Each Tuesday I design a new iPhone background with a different verse and share it on the blog. Seeing scripture several times throughout my day is always an encouragement to me - it reminds me of truth and helps me memorize new verses. Feel free to download, pin, and share these backgrounds as many times as you would like!

Monday's Letters

Screen Shot 2014-07-28 at 7.08.36 AM.png

Dear Mr. Hooker, last Tuesday you went Mr. Clean on the Suite - washing dishes, picking up the living room, starting a couple loads of laundry. While I should have been a little suspicious, I chalked it up to being my "birthday week"... until I heard a knock at the door and saw my Mom's smiling face popping up in the window. Turns out you two had been scheming her surprise visit for weeks, you sneaky guy! A clean house and some girl time with Mom? You knocked birthday week out of the park.

Dear Wildflour Cafe, my only birthday request each year is a piece of your sinfully delicious carrot cake. So you can imagine my disappointment when I realized that this year, your bakery and my house are 4 hours apart. Thankfully, my thoughtful Mom had one of your sweet masterpieces in hand when she arrived at our front door. 5 days and 5 pounds later, it's all gone and I'm all set until July 23, 2015.

Dear Lightning McQueen & Sally, after neglecting you for a month or two, we decided to take you on a trail ride this weekend. Thank you for reminding me how out of shape I am, how much I hate dirt, and how much fun it is to do something completely out of my comfort zone.

Dear Jake, it's amazing how 2 years of marriage can change habits and quirks. I'm always finding myself using words like "dude" and "literally", and last night you caught me singing in your Creed voice and busting out a few of your signature dance moves. Dude, we're literally going to be the same person 30 years from now (and I secretly can't wait).

Past Letters

Each Monday I write four letters: two letters to my husband and two random letters to whatever else is on my heart each week. What originally started as a fun way to record events and funny stories pleasantly developed into a weekly habit of practicing thankfulness.

Coffee Date with Katelyn James

I have been so excited to share today's Coffee Date with you!

Katelyn James is known by brides and photographers everywhere as a leading photographer in the wedding industry. Small business owners admire her for her client relationships and business savvy. But the one thing everyone appreciates about Katelyn is her sincere and friendly personality. She's a joy and an inspiration to follow along with, and I have a feeling I'm not the only one who would jump at the opportunity to have Coffee Date with her.

This morning Katelyn is joining me to share about what her normal day looks like, what she would change about her wedding day, and what she's learning during this season of life.

What's in your coffee mug this morning?

Well, I have to admit that Michael and I are still learning to be great coffee drinkers! When we have time, Michael likes to try out new blends in his french press! But today, I'm sipping on Trader Joe's strawberry lemonade! We buy that stuff in bulk because it's so delicious! :)

Give us a glimpse into a "day in the life" of Katelyn James.

Whew! Well, the first thing you should know is that our day-to-day is never the same, We don't have a set schedule Monday through Friday because our work takes us all over. We have, however, decided recently that we needed a system for making sure we have several "Stay at Home" days per month. We mark the calendar several months in advance and we save days to just be at home. This is crucial for us! On these days, we try to have somewhat of a routine. We normally get up around 7:30 or 8:00am on a GOOD day, I try to spend my first hour up NOT doing work. This is a great time for quiet time, journaling, and doing "house stuff". After an hour, I either start blogging or tackling emails. I try to get the "urgent" items accomplished first and then I work on the less time sensitive to-do list items. Normally around late afternoon or evening, Michael and I look at each other and say, "Wanna take him on a w-a-l-k?" Bokeh (our little bichpoo) knows what that means... even when we spell it out. So we walk around our neighborhood and then finish our work until dinner time. If I'm being completely honest, we work late sometimes. And when I say "we", I mean "I" work too late sometimes. Michael is the one who is good at cutting work OFF. I'm still working on it!

Seasons of life are often marked by specific lessons that God is teaching us. What lessons have marked this current season in your life?

I think God is teaching us just how important people are right now. While we may work a little too late in the evenings, we do make time for our friends in our life and the more we're able to do this, more joyful our life is. We're so busy and our schedule is so demanding but we normally see our parents every other week and we make random road trips to go relax with friends in the mountains. We're learning that a FULL life is ok but it's not ok if it's full of WORK. We desperately need balance!

Knowing all that you know about the wedding industry, would you go back and make any changes to your wedding day?

Yes! I would have delegated more! I wouldn't have let the stress of the details overwhelm me and I would have enjoyed more time with all of my guests! I also would have invited less guests! I have no idea how I would have made those cuts but having 415 guests is a little overwhelming! However, these little details didn't take away from our joy! That day was absolutely amazing!

Between shooting weddings, hosting workshops, writing blog posts, and running your business, I have a feeling life can get very busy for you and Michael. How do you simplify?

Scheduling our "Stay at Home" days has been life changing! When we're swamped and on the go, we can look at the calendar and know we have a break coming our way! "Stay at Home" days also guarantee that we can schedule double dates with friends and nights with our families! We have also started blocking off weekends and weeks one year in advance to make sure that we get some vacation time! We just recently slipped away to the lake with my family and those four days were glorious!! So I think it's safe to say that we simplify by being strategic and planning time off!

What is something you've been loving lately?

Michael and I have been LOVING "Fixer Upper" on HGTV! I know that's such a random thing to love but we are obsessed! Chip and Johanna Gaines are believers that design the most AMAZING renovations! They totally change their client's lives and it reminds us of why we love doing what we do. So we record all of their episodes and watch them while we work at home! :)

My husband, Jake, is joining in to ask you this last question. You and Michael are clearly dog people. Are you willing to share any dog shaming photos of Bokeh?

Ha! This cracks me up! Now you're going to think that we're just lying because we're obsessed with our perfect little pup... but he has only chewed up TWO things in his life... and that was my computer cord! He chewed up to of them! He has a thing for Apple cords. They are expensive to replace but I'll take two power cords instead of losing a ton of shoes or corners of tables. We have hear horror stories of our friends' dogs chewing up crazy things! We're super thankful that the only annoying things we have to deal with with Bokeh are his nerves. He gets SO nervous when we pack our suitcases. He shakes and he hides. Poor little guy.
